Why is my HI 3000 unit getting an A/D Failure Error during calibration?

Question

What is an A/D Failure Error on the HI 3000 unit during calibration? While calibrating I didn't place the Span weight on the scale and accepted the Do Trad Cal. Now when I go back to do the correct procedure I get the A/D Failure Error.

Answer

Analog to Digital (A/D) conversion uses a register to set levels on the HI 3000 series unit, which include the HI 3010, HI 3030, and HI 3300. The zero count level must be at least 10% less than the Span count number or you will get an A/D failure error. Included below is a procedure that will help set these registers to usable numbers. Newer software does not allow this action to proceed. At that point if you have applied more that the 10% minimum, there may be a hardware problem. This can be load cells, cabling errors, controller malfunction, and operator error where the weight was placed on the wrong scale.

This procedure does not work in all of the HI 3000 weight controllers. Try changing the Zero Ct and Span CT in the diagnostic display menu and then re calibrate. If you still get the A/D error go into the diagnostics with the high level password and take the controller back to factory defaults. If possible record all the other values and settings. You will need to re-enter the values and settings or restore from a Text file with the configuration information into the parameter R/W section.

To clear the calibration registers:

1. Press the test button and press enter on the device data list.
2. The entries with an * allow changes from this menu.
3. Arrow down to the Zero CT and change that to 500,000, press enter to accept.
4. Arrow down to the Span CT and change that to 14,000,000, press enter to accept.
5. Exit out and go into calibration.
6. Press enter at the zero value (should be zero)
7. With an empty scale arrow down to the "Do Trad Cal (ZERO) wait 5 seconds and press enter.
8. You should get a "function OK."

With the test weight on the scale:

1. Arrow to the span weight, enter the amount of the span weight and press enter to accept the test weight.
2. Arrow down to the "Do Trad Cal (SPAN)" , wait 5 seconds and press enter.
3. You should get a "function OK."

If you still get the A/D failure error, verify the wiring and that the load cell millivolt outputs are in the correct range.
