Question

What preventative maintenance do I need to perform on my scale?  I want to make sure my scale is weighing correctly all the time.

Answer

There are no specific maintenance tasks required for your scale, but there are some things you should check regularly if appropriate to your facility. These include:

1. House keeping of the general area, keeping it free of items that might interfere with the scale.

2. Keep the load cells clean and free of material that may impact the ability for the scale to deflect freely.

3. Measure the millivolt output (SIG+ AND SIG-) from each load cell under no load and normal load conditions, document and retain for future comparison.

4. Verify each scale's calibration with smaller test weights in various locations.

5. Verify bolts are torque to proper specifications (if appropriate) and properly aligned.

6. Verify the mechanical installations of piping and flexures on the scales are not causing binding.

7. Verify any electronic enclosures are properly sealed, closed and dry. Replace any gaskets that are damaged or worn.

8. Inspect the load cell cables for cracks and openings in the protective jackets.

9. Verify grounds and electrical circuits are proper.

10. Verify there is not any interference from other hoppers, pipes, fork lift or plant personnel traffic.
