How many HI 1756WS modules can I install in a ControLogix chassis?

Question

How many HI 1756WS and/or HI 1756-2WS modules can I install in a ControLogix chassis?

Answer

The number of devices is limited by the physical racks, power supply, and processor memory. There would be two considerations to keep in mind.

1. The current draw of each module on the power supply. The HI 1756WS modules draw:
0.31 Amps on the +5v supply
0.04 Amps + 0.004 Amps/350 ohms load cell on the +24v supply.

2. The second consideration would be memory. The processor has a limit to the amount of memory it has (this may be increased with a memory board on some models). If the number of modules causes the processor to run out of memory then that would be your limit. Each HI 1756WS or HI 1756-2WS uses X amount of memory determined by the setup and number of words mapped. You would need to consult Rockwell to determine the memory usage.

NOTE:  Testing here was done using a 7 slot local chassis with the processor, ControlNet module and 5 HI 1756 modules, with a 13 slot remote chassis with ControlNet module and 12 HI 1756 modules.  This was the maximum physical locations available on our system and everything operated ok.
