Does Ethernet I/P come standard on a HI 4050?

Last updated 03/18/2014 07:26 AM

Question

Can I use the standard Ethernet port on the HI 4050 to communicate and provide weight data and commands to my PLC?

Answer

The Ethernet port on the HI 4050 is used for several different communications options. It is used for the TCP/IP connection, the Ethernet I/P (-EIP) option, as well as the Modbus option.

The TCP/IP connection is used to go online with our built in browser and a series of commands can be sent to a program inside the PC.  Check answer ID 1542.

The HI 4050 has Ethernet IP, Modbus over Ethernet, RIO, Profibus and DeviceNet options available for bi-directional communications. It also has Analog Output (both voltage and current) available for transmitting an analog signal to a PC. You can connect a PC or PLC to your HI 4050 through one of these connections. The HI 4050 also has a serial output port to go to a printer or external scoreboard display. It does not have a bi-directional serial port to transmit and receive data and commands.

The Ethernet I/P (-EIP) option and Modbus over Ethernet (-MD) option use the same Ethernet port connection on the unit. The Modbus over Ethernet (-MD) option requires additional software written in your PLC or DCS.

Ethernet I/P and Modbus over Ethernet options can be activated in the field. With the purchase of the option, we can generate an activation key that the customer can enter into the unit to activate the option. To purchase the key, contact Hardy Service Center at 858-278-2900 menu selection 1. We will need the serial number of your unit.
