Can I use the HI 3000 series internal DeviceNet port as a master?

Question

How can I use the internal DeviceNet port as a master on my HI 3000 series unit?

Answer

On any network, each DeviceNet Master can have a number of slaves; Slaves can have only one Master; Some devices can be a Master to one device and still be a slave to another device.

The HI 3010, HI 3030 are configurable as Masters on a DeviceNet network and are also configurable for different lengths for their polled I/O as a slave to another Master.

In your DeviceNet configuration management software, you can designate your HI 3000 series unit to be used as a slave/master and set up the scanlist for the device accordingly.

You can control I/O through the DeviceNet from your HI 3000 series unit as a Master. The polled input and output for DeviceNet in the HI 3000 series is configurable to the size you need for your application. This is then mapped into the scan list of the "Master" scanner during the configuration of the Device Net network using your Device Net Manager configuration software. The data you want your HI 3000 series unit to transfer to the "Master" would be mapped through the HI 3000 series unit browser. Any data from the "Master" to your HI 3000 series unit would also be mapped through the HI 3000 series browser to the location/parameters you need it to go to.

For example:

You want to turn a light on when a process is done, and report the weight reading to a PLC. Your HI 3000 series unit would be a slave to the PLC and the Master to the light. This way, the PLC does not have to worry about controlling the light. Now, you can map the weight data to the DeviceNet output table to go to the PLC and also map data to control the light to this table.
