Can I mix different model load cells?

Question

We have a system with 4 load cells and one load cell needs to be replaced. Do I have to use the same manufacturer and model, or can I mix different model load cells together on the same system? Will my C2 function still work?

Answer

You should not mix different load cell capacities on a weighing system.
BUT;
Many load cells are manufactured as generic replacements.  If you want to mix load cells from different manufacturers, the following parameters need to be the same for each load cell:
1. Input and Output resistance (+/- 10%)
2. Millivolt per volt rating sensitivity (+/- 10%)
3. Capacity (Must be the same capacity)
4. Different mounting hardware may be a consideration as well.
5. Form, Fit and Function are general comparison guidelines.

The manufacturer may be different as long as the above specifications match for all load cells in a system.

If all the above parameters are not the same, the system will not be accurate and may not function at all.

If you want to use Hardy's C2® function, then all the above parameters must be met and all load cells must have C2® capability AND the controller must be C2® capable. Only Hardy brand controllers and load cells have C2® technology.

You may mix C2® and non C2® load cells of the same capacity, sensitivity and resistance as long as you are willing to perform a traditional (hard) calibration as C2® will not work properly unless all load cells in the system have C2® capability.

If you have Integrated Technician summing junction boxes you can still use most of the IT features for testing individual load cells.  You must run a successfull traditional calibration and have the C2 wire pair connected between the controller and IT summing card.
