Can I directly enter calibration values in the HI 2151/30WC?

Last updated 02/02/2015 10:44 AM

Question

I would like to be able to do a very rough calibration on my HI 2151/30WC without emptying the hopper on the load cell. This is useful in several instances such as when an instrument is replaced, and the hopper is full. We need a very rough calibration to allow us to avoid our interlocks and run enough to get empty and do a real calibration. I seem to remember a way to put "fake" zero and span counts, but I can't find anything in the manual.

Can I get a procedure for directly entering calibration values in my HI 2151/30WC?

Answer

This process described is for emergency situations only and in no ways represents a valid calibration method. You may want to confer with Hardy Process Solutions technical support staff to review this process and how it will effect your process. This will allow you to get a reasonable calibration to allow you to finish a process and empty the vessel for a real calibration.

You can directly enter calibration values in the HI 2151/30WC, but before you restore the calibration it would be prudent to review all the troubleshooting steps to ensure you don't have a bad load cell or controller.

There are three settings stored in the self test menu that represent your last calibration (SPAN, ZRCNT and FSCNT).  You will need to read these values from the SELF TEST list after a calibration has been performed and before the unit has failed.  Record these values.  To install these backup setting follow these steps:

1. Enter Configuration and down arrow to the CAL menu. If your system does not have the CAL selection, your instrument is too old and you will be unable to manually enter calibration values.

2. At the CAL menu press the ENTER button and HDCAL will appear. Press the MODE button and there will be a hidden menu. In this menu section you can input three settings from the last good calibration. The numbers in the fields do not represent your current setting and selecting or just pushing enter will destroy your current calibration. Press test/clr at each field and enter the correct numbers. After entering the numbers, press enter at the RETURN prompt and enter at ENDCAL prompt and the weight reading will display.

The secondary method is in the CAL menu, press enter and HDCAL will appear. Press the up arrow to softcal. If you know the Mv/V rating (2 or 3Mv/V) and the total capacity of the load cells, continue. If not, you can call us for a service technician to come to your facility to assist.

At softcal press the enter button and display the sensitivity. Press enter, tst/clr and input 20,000 for a 2 mV/V load cell or 30,000 for a 3mV/V load cell. Press enter and RANGE appears.
Press enter and tst/clr to enter the total capacity of the load cells on your scale (qty 4 - 5,000 lb load cells = 20,000 lb). It can be Lb or KG based on the setting of the units parameter.
At the Ref point press enter, a dash will appear. Press tst/clr, and 0 will appear. You can enter in an estimate of the amount of product in the hopper as your reference point. This will allow a calibration without emptying the hopper.
Wait 22 seconds and press the enter button.
Continue to press enter until the weight is displayed.

This calibration is better than using a load cell simulator, it takes away the calculations required to set zero and span. You should now have a rough calibration +/- 3 to 4%.

If you have to replace the weight controller, and they are both HI 2151/30WC models, you can swap the Secure Memory Module (SMM) from the old to the new unit. That will transfer all the calibration information at power up. A new calibration is not required.  The current draw setting (EXCITATION ERROR) may be different in the two controllers and EXCERR may appear on your controller.  When you can empty the vessel, run a new Cal Zero to clear the error and set a new current monitoring level.
