Question

How do I install an option in my HI 4050?

Answer

Instructions to install the option cards for the HI 4050 are included in the operations and installation manual. You can download the latest manual at www.hardysolutions.com and go to Products and select the product then go to Docs and Programs for the selction of data sheets, manuals and certificates.  All the option cards use a similar process to install.  The difference is where it is installed.  Each option is designed to go into a specific location, either the Network or Option slot.
The ControlNet communication card requires a modified back plate.  Contact tech support before you order a field upgrade for ControlNet in the HI 4000 series controllers.

NOTE: It is recommended that you send the HI 4000 controller in to have option cards installed.  Without paying close attention to static handling, your new card may fail.

Option cards installed in the field do not carry any warranty.

Network Option - Network Slot:

1. To prevent ESD damage, always observe proper grounding (including wearing a grounded wrist strap) when working on electronic instrumentation on your workbench.

2. Remove the front display by removing the 4-screw down knobs. The front display pulls away from the chassis and there is a flat ribbon cable that needs to be slowly pulled out of the chassis interior. Note this, because you must feed that cable back in when you reassemble. Observe how it is run through the larger opening on the cover plate. The back is where the connectors are located for the power and load cells and the front is where the display cable is installed.

3. Verify inventory of the option card:
     a.  PIN set for connecting the new card to the main PC board.
     b.  Pin set is slot dependent, 20 mm for the option slot and 28 mm for the network slot.
     c. Two black 4-40 screw, flat, and lock washers
     d. Two silver 4-40 screws
     e. Designation label
     f. OPTION card

4. With your wrist ground strap connected, remove the cards from the chassis and place in a static free location.

5. There is a temporary label over the option card connector opening. Pull and remove the plastic pins, then the base and the temporary label. You will not be reinstalling these parts.

6. Find the PIN set and note that there is a short pin and a long pin set. Install the long end through the very hard to see holes in the front part of the card.

7. Next, install the option card so the pins align correctly, and the components are towards the interior of the electronics. It will not align properly with the connector installed incorrectly.

8. Remove the connector and save.

9. Slide the pins into place and fit the card.

10. Install the two silver screws to secure the new card to the rest of the chassis. Do not install the back set of screws.

11. Install the label over the connector opening and insure to align the left and right holes.

12. Insert the black screw set into the holes and secure the back portion of the card to the rear cover plate. Verify the screws are secure. They only need to be snug. (10 inch pounds)

13. Re-install the connector removed in step 8.

14. Slide the cards back into the chassis. Note only the center slot will align and the hole for the display cable must align.

15. Thread the display cable through the
