Can I replace the cable on my load cell?

Last updated 10-20-2014 09:16

Question

Someone pulled the cable out of our Hardy load cell and I would like to re-connect it myself. Can you send me directions on how to replace the cable? I read the manual and performed the resistance measurements, but the results are outside the maximum tolerances. Can I repair this load cell or do I have to replace it?

Answer

Sorry, but the cables are not replaceable on a normal load cell. The cost of repair can exceed the cost to replace, unless it is a very high capacity canister or shear beam load cell (over 10k lbs). The estimated time to repair can be up to six weeks and you will only have a 90 day warranty or the remainder of your warranty period, whichever is longer.

With the Advantage line of load cells the cable can be replaced. The repair time is still six weeks, but the cost starts at 40% of the cost of new.  In many cases we find the act of tearing the cable out of the load cell also damaged the strain gauge or internal components.  If the load cell is actually damaged this repair may not be possible and a new load cell will need to be purchased.  There is an evaluation charge of two hours if the load cell is not repairable.  Again only a 90 day warranty, but less than the total cost for load cell replacement.  Specialty load sensors are listed as call the factory for consultation.
